The ancient Chinese always compared a blossoming peony to the matchless beauty of Yang Guifei, one of China’s Four Beauties and also the God of the apricot flower. In his poem Song of Qingping, Tang poet Li Bai writes, “Lady Yang – ruin of an Empire – spread joy like a rare flower. / When she appeared before her lord the Emperor, he would gaze on her laughingly.” – a complimentary remark depicting Yang Guifei’s peerless beauty, suggested by Li Bai with yet another poetic line “The clouds are reminiscent of her garments; the blossoms, her face.”
Legend has it that while Yang Guifei was appreciating flowers in the imperial garden, all the blossoms bowed in shame, hence her nickname “Xiu Hua,” literally meaning “putting flowers to shame.”
