The vase draws its inspiration from “Companions – Cold, Lonely Night on the Sandbank,” a painting created by Wu Guanzhong in 2001.
Wu Guanzhong said, “I drew two birds, one black and the other white, that silently stay close to keep warm through a livelong night.” The Companions vase interprets an intimate bond forged between the two companions. It takes a round form to express perfect relationships among people, and also features an ink wash technique whereby fine strokes and meticulous outlines are used to recreate harmony between the ink spots and empty expanses of white paper shown in the original by Wu Guanzhong.
